Greater customer orientation, extensive engineering support: Bearings and linear components from one source.

With effect from 01 October 2009, NSK has combined the Bearings and Linear Products departments into a single ‘European Industrial Business Unit”. The new business unit will be headed by Dr. Jürgen Ackermann, with the European sales and marketing functions being coordinated by Dipl.-Ing. Volker Polonyi.

The Bearings and Linear Products departments were previously organised as separate business units that acted largely independently in the market. This divide is being erased for good reason. Dr. Jürgen Ackermann, Managing Director of the new European Industrial Business Unit, says, ‘More and more customers are using both bearings and linear components from NSK. In line with the vision of “One face to the customer”, they now have one point of contact. That simplifies our cooperation.’

The two business units are also being consolidated to enhance customer and industry orientation. Dipl.-Ing. Volker Polonyi, Managing Director of Sales and Marketing for the European Industrial Business Unit says, ‘We have very extensive industry know-how in our core markets. Some of these industries, such as machine tool manufacturing, the steel industry, installation and operation technology, and food technology, use both our bearings and our linear components. So we are now better able to bundle our industry expertise.’

The move takes place within an environment of increasing demands on the company’s products. Dr. Jürgen Ackermann notes, ‘Our engineering services and our competencies in core technologies such as materials technology, tribology, and mechatronics are increasingly in demand, while ever closer cooperation with our customers’ development divisions becomes the norm.’ The expansion of the European Technology Centre in Ratingen, Germany (to be stepped up again in the coming months) will also play a role in this context. NSK’s European research and development activities will be concentrated there.

NSK was founded in Japan in 1916 and opened its first European sales office in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1963. In Europe, the company has recorded sales of approximately 800 million Euros. Some 3,000 people are employed in the five European manufacturing sites and twelve sales offices. NSK is one of the world’s three largest bearing manufacturers and is the world’s number one manufacturer of ball screws. In addition to housing the European Industrial Business Unit, Ratingen is also home to the Europe-wide automotive business. NSK develops and manufactures customised bearings and complete manual and electric steering systems for almost every major auto manufacturer.
